    What is a calibration weight?

A calibration weight is used to check the accuracy of a weighing scale or laboratory balance. These precisely-manufactured weights, also referred to as test weights, are a known, certified mass that will tell you if your weighing scale is reading correctly.

Which calibration weights do I need?

When choosing the best calibration weights for your needs, there are three things to consider: the weights you'll need to test your weighing scale or lab balance to capacity, how thoroughly you want to test the weighing equipment, and which class of weights you will need.

You’ll need enough calibration weights to match the full capacity (or the section you want to test) of your scale. For example, if you're testing a 150kg-capacity floor scale, you may choose to use a 100kg calibration weight, and a 50kg calibration weight. Sometimes, it is advisable to purchase a calibration weight set so you have a number of different test weights to choose from.

Next, you need to consider the purpose:

    - For routine accuracy checks, choose weights covering a few key points (e.g., 0%, 50%, 100% of the scale's capacity).

    - For full calibration/adjustment, go for a full set of calibration weights across the entire range, ideally traceable to a national standard.

We recommend using calibration weights that come with an OIML certificate or UKAS calibration certificate (in the UK).
